Elevating Women in Coffee

Why the women in coffee matter

At The Shed Coffee, we believe we have a responsibility to the communities within the coffee industry. This includes the many women contributing their labour at every step of the specialty coffee journey.

Most women in coffee have entry-level, low-paying jobs. But it doesn’t have to be this way. When women are empowered, communities thrive.

“Study after study has confirmed that there is no development strategy more beneficial to society as a whole — women and men alike — than one which involves women as central players.” — Kofi Annan

Women leaders in specialty coffee who inspire us

Amazing coffee is grown by women-led coffee producers. For example, you can taste the quality of the coffee from the Dumerso coffee washing station. (You can also taste fun flavours of Grand Marnier, ripe melon, juicy nectarine, Meyer lemon zest, and demerara syrup!)

CEO Hirut (Beti) Birhanu, pictured here, runs the Dumerso coffee washing station along with her sister, Manager Mahder Birhanu.

Beti and her sister, Mahder, are the dynamic duo behind Dumerso Washed, one of our signature “women in coffee” beans. Despite brutal hardships, Beti and her team did a great job rebuilding her business with a focus on specialty coffee and process control. She and her sister represent millions of us working nonstop for a better coffee scene. Read more about Beti’s business and her wonderful Dumerso coffee bean at our shop.

Our commitment to promoting the women in coffee

It is important to recognize, promote, and celebrate the women in coffee at each step of the specialty coffee journey. Sourcing coffee from female-led small farm productions is just one way we can support the women in coffee and build towards a better coffee industry.

Another way we support the women in coffee is by building our own proud coffee brand. Our fun, tasty Kool Brew canned coffee features a powerful image of the woman in coffee.

A 330ml can of The Shed Coffee's Kool Brew Coffee Colombia stands on a counter. The design features a stylized woman, which represents The Shed Coffee's promotion and support of the many women who work in all aspects of the coffee industry.

Our Kool Brew Coffee features a design honouring the many women who work in all aspects of coffee production.

We strive to improve our products and serve every day, so we can say proudly that there is no more border between coffee beans and coffee lovers.
